Using the Region's Transit System

This is listing of all the transit providers and services in the region.

Regional Transit

  • Amtrak - Serves VRE stations at Alexandria, Woodbridge, Quantico, and Fredericksburg, offering intercity rail links to various points along the Eastern Seaboard and inland. Telephone: 1-800-USA-RAIL.
  • Maryland Rail Commuter service (MARC) - Serves as a major means of commuting between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore and Perryville, Maryland as well as Washington, D.C. and Martinsburg, West Virginia. For MARC information, call 1-800-325-RAIL.
  • MetroAccess - ADA complementary paratransit, provided by WMATA in accordance with ADA law. Service provided to eligible riders certified as functionally unable to use regular fixed-route.
  • PRTC (OmniRide & OmniLink) PRTC provides commuter bus service along the busy I-95 and I-66 corridors to points north (OmniRide), and local bus services in Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park (OmniLink).
  • SW Tours provides commuter bus service to the Vienna Metro Station, Rosslyn Metro Station, Pentagon Metro Station, and Washington D.C. for residence of the Shenandoah Valley including Woodstock, VA and  Front Royal, VA.
  • Virginia Railway Express (VRE) - Provides peak period commuter rail service from Manassas and Fredericksburg into stations in Alexandria, Crystal City and downtown Washington, D.C, as well as suburban locations along the way. Be prepared with the departure and arrival stations and the time of day during which you want to travel.
  • Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) - Operates Metrorail and Metrobus, throughout the region.   Metro's Customer Information is available at (202) 637-7000 (TDD (202) 638-3780). 

Alexandria

  • DASH - Connects the Braddock Road, Eisenhower Avenue, King Street, Van Dorn Street and Pentagon METRO stations to points throughout Alexandria. Operates seven days a week, and monthly passes are available. Call (703) 370-3274 for more information.
  • Senior Taxi -  Service for seniors to travel within the City of Alexandria for shopping trips and within 5-mile radius for medically-related travel.  For more information call (703) 836-4414.
  • Free King Street Trolley -The City of Alexandria’s free King Street Trolley transports residents, visitors, and those who work in Old Town, between the King Street Metrorail Station and the Potomac River waterfront.
  • WMATA - Metrobus and Metrorail serve Alexandria.  For more information call (202) 637-7000 (TDD (202) 638-3780).
  • VRE - Both the Manassas and Fredericksburg lines have a station in Alexandria. Arlington
  • ART - ART buses operate in Arlington County.  For more information on these ART services call (703) 228-RIDE. Additional information about ART can also be obtained at Arlington County's transportation web site, CommuterPage.com.

  • VRE - Both the Manassas and Fredericksburg lines have a station in Crystal City. City of Fairfax

  • CUE - Two lines that serve the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU metrorail station, George Mason University and the City of Fairfax. Seven days a week. Fare is $.75. Call (703) 385-7859 for more information.
  • City Wheels is a City of Fairfax program that provides alternative transportation within the City, to the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station, to George Mason University, and to Fair Oaks Hospital for city residents who are disabled and find it difficult or impossible to use conventional bus service. City Wheels service is provided through private taxicabs. The fare for this service is $1.50. For more information, please call 703-385-7859.

City of Falls Church

  • Fairfax Connector - Operates several routes in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County. Call (703) 339-7200 for more information.

Fairfax County

  • Fairfax Connector - Serves ten Metrorail stations in Northern Virginia.  In addition to Fairfax County, Fairfax Connector serves areas in Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax City.  Call (703)339-7200 for more information.
  • Transportation Association of Greater Springfield (TAGS) Shuttle- TAGS is a transportation advocacy organization which supports transportation options and solutions for Greater Springfield.   • Seniors on the Go! - This program is limited to individuals 65 or older, with an annual income of $40,000 or less for a family of one and $50,000 or less for a married family of two.  Application Form

Loudoun County

  • Loudoun County Commuter Buses -Loudoun County Transit operates rush hour service from park and ride lots in Loudoun to destinations that include West Falls Church Metro, Rosslyn, the Pentagon, and Washington, D.C. Loudoun County Transit also provides service from West Falls Church Metro to employment sites in Eastern Loudoun County. Call 1-877-465-2287 for more information.
  • Virginia Regional TransitVirginia Regional Transit, in partnership with the Loudoun County Office of Transportation Services, has released a new and updated Bus Services & Schedules Guide. The booklet provides maps and schedules for all the local fixed route bus service provided by Virginia Regional Transit in Loudoun County.

Special Needs

  • MetroAccess - Curb-to-curb paratransit service is available in areas served by Metrobus, Metrorail, ART, Connect-A-Ride, CUE, DASH, Fairfax Connector, RIBS, Ride On, THE BUS, and Tysons Shuttle.  Passengers who meet the criteria specified by the American Disablities Act and are certified as eligible may use MetroAccess service.  Call (301) 562-5361 or visit the www.wmata.com   for more information.
  • Alexandria DOT - Anyone living within the city limits of Alexandria who has a disability which prevents the use of regular transit service is eligible to use DOT. Participation is by application to the city of Alexandria. Call (703) 838-3800 for more information.
  • City of Fairfax - City Wheels- The city of Fairfax City Wheels program offers alternative transportation within the city of Fairfax to the Vienna Metrorail station, to George Mason University, and to Fair Oaks Hospital. Participation is by application to the city of Fairfax. Coupons for transportation are obtained by placing a mail order prior to each month. Orders may take up to two weeks to process. Rides are arranged by the participant by contacting the transportation company directly. Call (703) 385-7889 for more information.
  • Fairfax County - Fastran- Fairfax County owns and operates the Fastran fleet, which offers door-to-door service within Northern Virginia for consumers of county human services programs and provides core carrier service for MetroAccess. In addition, there is a midday Dial-a-Ride program for income eligible residents. Trips are scheduled by the participant through Fastran. Participation is by application to Fairfax County. The program is structured to meet the transportation needs of low income persons by restricting eligibility to those with an annual householdincome at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty level. Fastran also received a state grant to provide Fastran-to-Work service for Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) clients and their children living in the western part of the county.   • STAR - Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents is Arlington County's reserved trip service for persons with disabilities.  STAR is an alternative to calling Metro Access  to reserve trips.  Residents currently certified-eligible under the Metro Access program and other Arlington residents authorized by a County agency may use STAR.  Call Star at (703) 228-TRIP for more information
