Using the Region's Transit System

This is listing of all the transit providers in the region, their service areas, and how to access them.

Northern Virginia is fortunate to have a number of public transportation options available. These choices are listed below along with information to help you utilize the transit system to its fullest.

Regional Transportation:
  • Amtrak - Serves VRE stations at Alexandria, Woodbridge, Quantico, and Fredericksburg, offering intercity rail links to various points along the Eastern Seaboard and inland. Telephone: 1-800-USA-RAIL.
  • Maryland Rail Commuter service (MARC) - Serves as a major means of commuting between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore and Perryville, Maryland as well as Washington, D.C. and Martinsburg, West Virginia. For MARC information, call 1-800-325-RAIL.
  • MetroAccess - ADA complementary paratransit, provided by WMATA in accordance with ADA law. Service provided to eligible riders certified as functionally unable to use regular fixed-route.

  • SW Tours provides commuter bus service to the Vienna Metro Station, Rosslyn Metro Station, Pentagon Metro Station, and Washington D.C. for residence of the Shenandoah Valley including Woodstock, VA and  Front Royal, VA.

  • Virginia Railway Express (VRE) - Provides peak period commuter rail service from Manassas and Fredericksburg into stations in Alexandria, Crystal City and downtown Washington, D.C, as well as suburban locations along the way. For schedule information call the VRE automated phone system 24-hours a day, at: (703) 684-0400 or 1-800-RIDE-VRE, (TTY number: (703) 684-0551). Be prepared with the departure and arrival stations and the time of day during which you want to travel.
  • Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) - Operates Metrorail and Metrobus, throughout the region.  Serves northern Virginia with 20 rail stations in Virginia, as well as stations in the District and Maryland. WMATA also runs an extensive regional Metrobus service in the Washington D.C. metro area. Information is available in more than 140 languages weekdays from 6 a.m. until 10:30 p.m., weekends from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • Regional Special Needs Transit - Reduced fare media for people with disabilities for Metro, VRE and MARC are all available at The Commuter Store.  In addition, Project Action Accessible Traveler's Database is a comprehensive database of accessible transit services in the United States.  WMATA's MetroAccess also provides regional paratransit service.

City of Alexandria:
  • DASH - Connects the Braddock Road, Eisenhower Avenue, King Street, Van Dorn Street and Pentagon METRO stations to points throughout Alexandria. Operates seven days a week, and monthly passes are available. Call (703) 370-3274 for more information.
  • DOT Paratransit Program- Specialized transportation for Alexandria residents who cannot use fixed-route service. 
  • Senior Taxi -  Service for seniors to travel within the City of Alexandria for shopping trips and within 5-mile radius for medically-related travel.  For more information call (703) 836-4414.
  • Senior Trolley -A bus available to persons 60 and older on specially scheduled routes to shopping and senior centers. Donation requested. Charter service available for fee. Phone: (703) 838-0920.
  • WMATA - Has several metro stations in Alexandria.  Served by Metrobus Routes 7A-X, 8S-Z, 9A-E, 10A-E, 11P, 11Y, 16L, 17A-B, 18F, 21A-F, 23A-C, 25,A-R, 25B, 28C,28F-G, 29K-N and P13. For more information call (202) 637-7000 (TDD (202) 638-3780).
  • VRE - Both the Manassas and Fredericksburg lines have a station in Alexandria.   • Special Needs Transit - Anyone living within the city limits of Alexandria who has a disability which prevents the use of regular transit service is eligible to use Alexandria DOT. Participation is by application to the city of Alexandria.  In addition, WMATA operates a regional paratransit system, MetroAccess, that serves Alexandria. Arlington County:
  • ART - ART buses operate a continuous loop route in Crystal City. ART also provides a Free Shopper's Shuttle Sponsored by the Charles E. Smith Company between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM that leaves from the Crystal Underground every 5 minutes. The base fare is 50 cents. ART also provides a free shopper's shuttle between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM that leaves from the Crystal Underground every 5 minutes. For more information on these ART services call (703) 228-RIDE.   • WMATA - Served by Metrobus routes: 1B-Z, 2A-B-C-G, 3A-B-E-F, 4A-S, 7A-X, 8S-Z, 9A-E, 10A-E, 10B-C-D, 11P, 13A-G, 15K-L, 16A-J, 16L, 16S-X, 17A-M, 17G-L, 18E-F, 18G-J, 18P, 21A-F, 22A-F, 23A-C, 24M-P, 24T, 25A-r, 25B, 28F-G, 29C-X, 38B and P13.   • Special Needs Transit- STAR, Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents, is Arlington County's reserved trip service for persons with disabilities.  STAR is an alternative to calling MetroAccess  to reserve trips.  Residents currently certified-eligible under the MetroAccess program and other Arlington residents authorized by a County agency may use STAR.  Call Star at (703) 228-TRIP for more information.

City of Falls Church:
  • Fairfax Connector - Operates several routes in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County. Call (703) 339-7200 for more information.
  • WMATA - Served by Metrobus routes: 2A-B-C-G, 3A-B-F, 22A-B, and 28A-B. For more information call (202) 637-7000 (TDD (202) 638-3780) or go to www.wmata.com.
  • Special Needs Transit -  The city of Falls Church Fare Wheels program is a regional transportation network including the cities of Falls Church and Fairfax, and Arlington County. Fare Wheels allows participants to use redeemable coupons for up to $35 per month to pay for transportation services. Individuals may choose from among a pool of participating transportation providers, selecting the one that best meets their needs. Participants must be residents of the city of Falls Church, at least 62 years of age or permanently disabled, with an annual income not to exceed $30,000. Participation is by application to the city of Falls Church.  Additionally, WMATA operates a regional paratransit system, MetroAccess, that serves the city of Falls Church.   • GEORGE Bus - GEORGE is the City of Falls Church, Virginia’s clean diesel bus that provides local transit service to and from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) East and West Falls Church Metrorail stations and throughout the City.

City of Fairfax:
  • CUE - Two lines that serve the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU metrorail station, George Mason University and the City of Fairfax. Seven days a week. Fare is $.50. Call (703) 385-7859 for more information, or go to the CUE Web or the OnCue Business Directory for additional route and schedule information.
  • City Wheels is a City of Fairfax program that provides alternative transportation within the City, to the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station, to George Mason University, and to Fair Oaks Hospital for city residents who are disabled and find it difficult or impossible to use conventional bus service. City Wheels service is provided through private taxicabs. The fare for this service is $1. For more information, please call 703-385-7859.

Fairfax County:
  • Fairfax Connector - Consists of 58 routes serving ten Metrorail stations in Northern Virginia.  In addition to Fairfax County, Fairfax Connector serves areas in Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax City.  Most service is in the southeastern area of the county and in the Dulles Corridor.   Expanded service was initiated in the Dulles Corridor in July 1999.  Base fares range from $0.50 to $2.50.  Call (703)339-7200 for more information.
  • Transportation Association of Greater Springfield (TAGS) Shuttle- TAGS is a transportation advocacy organization which supports transportation options and solutions for Greater Springfield.   • WMATA's SmartMover Montgomery-Tysons Beltway Express - Offers express weekday service between Montgomery County and  Tysons Corner via the Tysons Westpark Transit Center. Fare of $2.00 each way. The following Metrobus routes also serve Fairfax County: 1B-Z, 2A-G, 2W, 3A-F, 3W-Z, 4A-B-S, 7A-F-H-X, 9A, 10D, 11Y, 12C-d, 12E-F, 12L-M, 12R-S, 15K-L, 16A-J, 16L, 16W, 17A-M, 17G-L, 18E-F, 18G-J, 18P-R-S, 20F-Y 22A-B, 23A-C, 24T, 25A-R, 25B, 28A-B, 28F-G, 29C-X, 29K-N, S80-81, and S91.  In addition, there are 8 Metrorail stations in the county.   • Special Needs Transit - Fairfax County provides the Fastran fleet, which offers door-to-door service within Northern Virginia for consumers of county human services programs and provides core carrier service for MetroAccess. In addition, there is a midday Dial-a-Ride program for income eligible residents. Dial-a-Ride fares are paid on a cash basis and range from $1 to $3 per trip. Trips are scheduled by the participant through Fastran. Participation is by application to Fairfax County. The program is structured to meet the transportation needs of low income persons by restricting eligibility to those with an annual household income at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty level. Fastran also received a state grant to provide Fastran-to-Work service for Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) clients and their children living in the western part of the county.  Call (703) 222-9764 for more information.   • Seniors on the Go! - This program is limited to individuals 65 or older, with an annual income of $40,000 or less for a family of one and $50,000 or less for a married family of two.  Application Form

Loudoun County:
  • Loudoun County Commuter Buses - Weekday commuter buses, inbound in the mornings and outbound in the evenings, from Purcellville, Hamilton, Leesburg and Eastern Loudoun (Dulles North Transit Center) into Rosslyn, the Pentagon and numerous stops in Washington DC. Leaves Loudoun from 5:00 a.m. to 8:35 a.m. and leaves the District from 3:35 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Fare is $6 cash each way or $50 for a book of ten trips. Bus service is also offered from Cascades to West Falls Church Metro each weekday with inbound trips leaving Cascades from 5:25 a.m. to 6:55 p.m. and outbound departures from West Falls Church from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Fare for this service is $1.50 cash each way or $12.50 for a book of ten trips. Loudoun County also offers reverse commute service from West Falls Church Metro to the campuses of AOL and MCI/WorldCom in Ashburn each weekday with departures from West Falls Church Metro from 6:25 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. and departures from Ashburn from 4:30 p.m. to 6:10 p.m. Fares for this service are $1.00 cash for round trip service.   • Special Needs Transit- Loudoun County Transportation Association provides door-to-door, including paratransit, services in Leesburg and the Sterling area five days per week for approximately eight hours per day. Special runs have also been made to support specific activities in the county. Fare books of 10 or more trips can be purchased, or payment can be made on a cash-per-ride basis. Special Needs Transit:
  • Alexandria DOT - Anyone living within the city limits of Alexandria who has a disability which prevents the use of regular transit service is eligible to use DOT. Participation is by application to the city of Alexandria. Call (703) 838-3800 for more information.
  • Arlington Access - Arlington County funds trips for Arlington County residents who are certified eligible for the ADA MetroAccess service. Residents call MetroAccess to schedule their trips, and MetroAccess sends the trip information to the Arlington Access Core Carriers, Red Top Cab and Diamond Transportation Services, for actual service delivery. Arlington then pays the core carriers directly for the services provided.
