On April 9, 2009 the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission voted to end its RIDE FREE program. For the past decade NVTC has used federal funds to reimburse Northern Virginia’s transit systems each summer for offering free bus fares on forecast Code Red bad air quality days. The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority is expected to reprogram remaining funds to other worthwhile transit projects that are also designed to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
