Outreach Center: Public Involvement

Northern Virginia citizens can play an important role in shaping the policies and future of public transit in our region. Here you will find opportunities for involvement in the transportation planning process. If you are interested in participating in the regional transportation planning process, including major corridor projects, the following links will provide information about relevant public meetings.
  1. NVTC has monthly meetings at 8 PM the first Thursday of every month that are open to the public. The meetings are held at our offices at 4350 N Fairfax Dr. Suite 720, Arlington, VA.

  2. PRTC (www.OmniRide.com) has monthly meetings at 7:30 PM the first Thursday of every month that are open to the public. The meetings are held at their offices at 14700 Potomac Mills Road, Woodbridge, VA 22192.

  3. Fairfax County TAC – A schedule of Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) meetings

  4. Transportation Planning Board - The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the region, and plays an important role as the regional forum for transportation planning. MPO’s prepare plans and programs that the federal government must approve in order for federal-aid transportation funds to flow to their regions. The TPB has monthly meetings at noon on the third Wednesday of every month with a citizen comment period at the beginning of each meeting. They also have a Citizen Advisory Committee that meets on the Thursday preceding the TPB meetings. This link gives information on all the TPB subcommittee meetings as well.

  5. Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (www.novaregion.org/novatrans/) The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority was created by the Virginia General Assembly on July 1, 2002. The Authority is charged with developing a regional transportation plan involving both, roads and transit; working with Northern Virginia's communities to develop regional priorities and policies to improve air quality; and serving as an advocate for the transportation needs of Northern Virginia before the state and federal governments. The Authority welcomes involvement of the public in its activities.

  6. VDOT public meetings - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) offers opportunities for citizens to learn about and comment on transportation projects and issues as they develop.

  7. VDRPT – A schedule of public meetings for VDRPT projects.

  8. WMATA - Schedule of board meetings for Metro.

  9. Commonwealth Transportation Board (www.virginiadot.org/infoservice/ctb-default.asp)

  10. MWAQC - The Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC) is an entity certified by the Governors of Virginia and Maryland, along with the mayor of the District of Columbia, to prepare an air quality plan for the DC-MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area (see Map) under Section 174 of the federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. MWAQC members are elected officials of the Metropolitan Council of Governments (COG) member jurisdictions plus members from Charles, Calvert, and Stafford counties; the air management and transportation directors of Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia; members of the Maryland and Virginia General Assemblies; and the chair of the Transportation Planning Board. See the bylaws for additional detail. MWAQC coordinates air quality planning activities among COG, other external committees, and the Transportation Planning Board; reviews policies; resolves policy differences; and adopts an air quality plan for transmittal to Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. MWAQC subcommittees include the Executive Committee, the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), and the Air Quality Public Advisory Committee (AQPAC).
